Byrd hard red winter wheat was developed by the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station and released to seed producers in August 2011. Byrd was released based on its high grain yield in dryland and irrigated production in eastern Colorado, resistance to stripe rust, resistance to Ug-99 race of stem rust (and its derivatives), and superior milling and bread baking quality characteristics. Byrd was named in honor of former CSU Wheat Breeder Byrd Curtis.
